After our recent coverage on the GTI Asia China Expo 2024, there is another major arcade event that took place over in China – Wahlap E-Sport Championship 2024. Regular readers should be familiar with Wahlap, who has been a big player on the arcade scene in China, with growing influence out West through games like Storm Racer, Asphalt 9 Arcade, Asphalt Moto Blitz, and Monster Eye, among others. They also are returning as an advertiser here to Arcade Heroes. Until IAAPA rolls around, let’s take a look at this championship.

Wahlap E-Sport Championship 2024

While full details are provided by the press release below, I’ll distill it for you first. Wahlap is no stranger to such competitions, having launched this particular championship back in 2008. Arcades have been at the heart of each annual event, as have some nice cash prizes.

Wahlap E-Sports Championship 2024

For this year’s tournament, the games that players participated on came from Bandai Namco and Sega, with one Wahlap exception:

  • Maximum Tune 5DX+
  • MaiMai DX (Open & girls division)
  • Taiko No Tatsujin
  • Chunithm
  • Kingdom’s Fantasy

Given how often I see Eastern players commenting on “how far behind” North America is with MaxiTune, it’s interesting that it’s the game that was showcased here and not any from the 6s. Kingdom’s Fantasy is a new Wahlap title, which I’m not sure is destined for Western shores.

As noted in the press release below, there wasn’t a small handful of players involved here – “more than 5,500 players” participated in the auditions, with 98 players reaching the finals. ¥500,000 (approximately $70,000USD) worth of prizes were awarded, some of which did include some big checks.

Wahlap E-Sport

Also from the release, it sounds like Wahlap hopes to expand the scope of their tournament into a wider part of the world, although it doesn’t detail how they might go about doing so in the future.

Wahlap will have a booth at IAAPA 2024, and some of their products will be on some other booths. Here’s the release:
